"The Lord of the Rings" - What a magnificent story! Probably the single most influential fantasy story of all time, J.R.R. Tolkien knew how to infuse the magic of imagination, to creatively weave a rich and emotive tapestry - a fantasy tale which would last for years because of its immense depth and beauty. Like you, as a Tolkien enthusiast, and ourselves as musicians who have grown up reading Tolkiens stories, we wanted to express some of that wonder - to re-create the world of Tolkien in sound and melodies for you to enjoy. We knew it had to have an epic quality to it. For our own enjoyment it had to be mystical.... magical.... alive.... grand.... and .....frightening! We believe it holds these qualities for those who listen, either while you are reading the great books themselves, or simply to escape to another world while relaxing in a darkened, candlelit room. "One Ring" was started in 1994, and took 4 years to compose in spare time between the normal activites at MetroGnome Studios, and therefore it precedes the current Tolkien wave of interest initiated by the Peter Jackson movies, and yet it has a timeless quality. The "One Ring" project was a collaborative effort built upon ideas and suggestions from people all over the world who listened to early versions of the tracks, and provided feedback and encouragement for the overall sound of the album. Bombadil When we composed this track we chose an unusual 5/4 time signature to suggest Tom's charismatic, bubbly, happy-go-lucky personality. However Tom is not all that he initially seems to be, and there is a darker, more mysterious side to him. Towards the end of this track you hear the ring spinning, and we pictured this section from the chapter "In the House of Tom Bombadil" as our inspiration for the track..... "Show
me the precious ring!" he said suddenly in the midst of the story:
and Frodo, to his own astonishment, drew out the chain from his pocket,
and unfastening the Ring handed it at once to Tom. It seemed to grow larger
as it lay for a moment on his big brown-skinned hand. Then suddenly he
put it to his eye and laughed. For a second the hobbits had a vision,
both comical and alarming, of his blue eye gleaming through a circle of
gold. Then Tom put the Ring around the end of his little finger and held
it up to the candle-light. For a moment the hobbits noticed nothing strange
about this. Then they gasped. There was no sign of Tom disappearing!
